Anyone who has ever went bluegill fishing will tell you they maybe a smaller fish, but they do not give up easily. Many people love these fish and catching them is part of the fun as well. Here are some simple tips to help you bring home more bluegills than ever before. Choose the right rod and reel will be your first order of business. Since bluegills do not get huge, a light rod is best suited to catch them. The main reason it is much easier to feel the bluegill pulling or tugging on the line. When using live bait or even lures try to keep them smaller in size. Live bait such as worms and nightcrawlers seem to work best when trying to catch bluegills. Make sure they cover the whole hook when fishing for a bluegill.

Since bluegill spawn in the spring and early summer that is the best time to catch them. As the water temperature rises they tend to head to shallow water until summer arrives so keep this in mind. Fishing early in the morning or evening for bluegill will give you the best chance for success as well. As the summer heat arrives you will also need to fish deeper to find bluegills as they head too much deeper depths. Small soft-plastic jigs that are lightweight seem to work well will bluegills. Minnows also at times have been shown to be very effective as well. One thing with a bluegill is they change what they like all the time. What may work one day will not work the next, so always keep this in mind.
